Chad VanGaalen - Live in Studio; February 21, 2005 @ CBC Radio2

this is not my recording. this isn't even on a tape, so again, i'm fudging rules.

(I*Heart*CBC)

regardless, ... lately, i've been very productive cleaning the house, a few times this week, just moving along to this old classic live set...

..and I wondered, has anyone else heard this?

i ripped this recording from a CBC Radio 2 web stream in 2005/6?
i am certain the feed disappeared  by 2007/8.

A studio recorded ~-30 minute session, with 'golden' rare unreleased & alt.versions tracks.

Recorded Feb 21st, 2005. (exactly 14 years ago, today!!!)

As a set, it is an epic adventure of a gem. (i.e harmonica rips and keyboard riffs and tambourinetc.)
Track names remain as they were listed at the time.  Some have been renamed/released since.

track listing:

electro physical
dead ends
clinically dead
slow kill

surrounded in smoke
'ill have no eyes
subterranean city roots

Sappyfest #1: Five Hours of Sound Capsules

Kids Jam @ Sappyfest #1

It's been almost two years since I’ve shared a recording I’ve made.

As evidenced from previous posts, I'm obviously a huge fan of Eric`s Trip, and all the musicians who comprised the original band (Julie, Chris, Rick and Mark).

In the summer of 2006, my future/current wife and I drove across half of Canada to attend the first Sappy Records Music Festival (now known as Sappyfest), in Sackville NB, and of course, I brought the old radio shack tape deck.

I taped both 1.5 hour sets from Eric’s Trip, and all three solo sets from the band members.

Sappyfest continues to be an annual tradition for many, and Sappyfest #12 is happening this coming weekend. In recognition of Sappyfests’ continued awesomeness, I’d like to share my uncut recordings from Sappyfest #1 with anyone who may be interested in listening to them.

Be warned: The quality is not top notch: these sets were recorded on a $20 tape deck, held in hand.

Enjoy!

-         Three 30 minute solo sets: I’ll keep the track listing “a surprise”.  You should know that Rick’s set is a masterful (and legendary) tribute set to Syd Barrett!

Eric’s Trip @ George’s Roadhouse, Sunday August  6, 2006

-         This Sunday Set is a real window into a late night ET set: the playing is sloppy but the stage banter is amazing. ;)

Moonsocket - '19 little songs' (Sap003)

This is a 1993-indie classic album that you should really hear in full. .... if you are someone who appreciates the nuances of lo-fi home recording at their most sincere.

If you would like to hear a ~six song selection....

Moon socket continues to make music.

^^ Id write sappy musings about my affection for this tape in my past. ... but I wont.,,,,

I Found This Box of 7s

And now for a twist.  After the parents brought me the last of my remnants, I found this box of 7” s.

I won’t share much more of these, but I decided to rip a representative EP (~20 minutes).

The tracks below were ripped by me, this past week, from the vinyl I have in hand.

Most of this music is representative of the Canadian maritime indie music from the 1990s                .
(only Sentridoh/Elliott Smith are from the American west coast)

Julie Doiron & The Wooden Stars, Toronto, (afternoon, July 1998)

I recorded this in the “back room” of Cameron House (or was it Horseshoe?)

Noone has heard this recording beyond myself....

Julie Doiron &The Wooden Stars   (*Wooden Stars Opener)

They played a 6pm, summer set, July 1998. And despite the beating heat, and beating dance music from the other room.  A crowd of no more than 20 people were packed in the back to listen.  The path from the dance hall to the washroom ran right through the crowd in the back... I remember Mike F was quitting smoking... but had to bum one ... I hope that worked out. .... regardless,

 I brought my tape deck.

The album of the same name eventually came out in early 2000.
This was a kind of 'early rehearsal'...   and as tight as on recording day. IMO.
         .. more jazzy even....
(the album itself should have been more 'off the floor' itself...even though it already was....)

The highlight = all of it, or tracks 3/ 6/  9  (really)    .... or, in 'a song':     Drums&Horns
… but throughout, a really tight set; more so, after each and every song… despite slow starts...

This is ‘quality’ audio, for a Radio Shack mono tape deck.

TRACKS
0 it is okay to stare (solo)
1 again (solo)
2 so fast
3 sorry
4 sooner or later
5 the longest winter
6 drums and horns
7  banter
8 tonight, we sleep
9 dance me

* Backing music of James Brown on track 3 is copyrighted... :P

** .and if you are here: watch for JD&TWS July 99 @ Rivoli...... coming.....

Evie - Forever (1995)

Evie,
Their first home recorded cassette also came out, (in coincidence to my first post)  in November 1995…

Evie took their name from an Eric’s Trip song, much as Eric’s Trip took a name themselves, five  years prior, from a track off of Sonic Youth’s  Daydream Nation (1988) …

Evie released  a half dozen cassettes, as a hobby, home recording their songs, from Swan Lake MB (1995- 2000)…

I think  specifically mail ordered each of them, back then, as they came out… Because I should have.

Today I’ll share their first EP

Top tracks:  ”Elarsi Hears”   “Kiss and Tell“   “Ownership”

Enjoy:
